I find that most services have no visible API or are not available in Australia, so there doesn't seem to be much I can do. Get an up-to-date version of rhythmbox, download rb-equalizer.tar.bz2, start a terminal, an do: # mkdir -p ~/.local/share/rhythmbox/plugins # cd ~/.local/share/rhythmbox/plugins # tar -xjf /path/to/rb-equalizer.tar.bz2 Start rhythmbox, "Edit->Preferences->Plugins", check the little box next to the plugin, and you should be done. If that does not work, deactivate the plugin and close rb. Then start rhythmbox from command line with # rhythmbox -d > /tmp/rb.log 2>&1 , activate the plugin, close rb, paste the contents of /tmp/rb.log to e.g. http://pastebin.com and ask again for help, providing a link to your log. Recently, the music that is imported is somewhat distorted. This has occurred ever since Itunes "improved" their music with higher quality (density) recordings. It is almost as if there is a problem in the codec's. To accomplish the import, I first burn the music from Itunes onto a CD in CD Audio format (this also serves as my backup). Then, I use the Audio CD Extractor application to copy the music from the CD to my MP3 music folder. The music sounds OK when played from the CD under Windows (both in Itunes and Windows Media Player), but sounds distorted when played under Linux. I have also access my Itunes library directly from RythmBox application and the same things happen. Is this an already identified problem? For what it's worth, I tried one file linked from the all4mp3 page and it played properly. There are audio books with 8 "Track 01" songs - all of them have a different Disk number, but when you copy them to the local media library they are all named "01 - Track01.mp3". I'd like to add the Disk number to the name if possible. Here is the story :) On my computer I currently have: "Root" partition with stable ubuntu jaunty, "Home" partition with all personal data (mounted on Root as /home), "Test" partition with unstable ubuntu karmic (Home partition non mounted here). Due to policies in gnome-disk-utility, when I'm in karmic, Home and Root are not mounted by default and you need admin privileges (or password) to mount them. I suppose the same occurs in every other GNOME 2.28 based distro. Now, yesterday I manually mounted Home and imported music in Rhythmbox. Today I started Rhythmbox before mounting Home. RB simply started to remove songs from library. Is this the right behaviour? Could we make Rhythmbox propose to mount the (internal) partition "on demand"? It's all pretty straightforward until she has a full MP3 player. At this point, Rhythmbox is very unhelpful and un-user-friendly. The problems are many-fold. Trying to drag and drop titles just yields (usually several) dialogs: Error Transferring Track Could not write to resource. Is my mom supposed to know what this means? Not likely. But let's pretend she does so we can move on to the next problem(s). So she has figured out from that very clear error displayed that her MP3 player is full. And, yes, she can select her MP3 player in RB and see on the bottom left how much music on there in terms of songs, time and space used (i.e. 594 songs, 1 day 14 hours and 35 minutes, 3.5GB). But what does that mean to her? What's a "GB"? It tells her how much she has used but not a clue how much space is free. Oh wait. When she bought it, the package said it was a 4GB player. So she has .5G free still. Why is RB complaining? You get the picture. So let's assume she some how at this point has decided she needs to remove some stuff from her MP3 player to put the new tracks on. But how many existing songs does she need to delete? Oh simple. The same number of minutes as the tracks she wants to add. Of course to us geeks, we know this is wrong. It's not very easy to even figure out how many minutes the songs she's selected to copy takes up, but I will cover that in more detail below... So let's say she gets past the incongruence between minutes and bytes and knows that she needs to remove enough existing tracks to free up the number of bytes that her new songs require. How many bytes do her new songs require? She has selected (through the magic of CTRL and/or SHIFT and mouse clicks) the songs she wants to copy. Nowhere is it visible how many minutes, nor how many bytes that selection requires. And that's not even taking into account that the result of the transcoding required to meet the MP3 player's requirements might be different than the source tracks. Yes, she could create a new playlist and put the desired tracks into it to get a list of song count, time and space, but again, this does not address the issues with pre and post transcoding differences. And having to add the steps to create a playlist and then delete it just to get an accounting is, well, just silly. So as you can see, there is a huge hole in the usability of RB for the non-geek crowd. What I think needs to happen is that when a list of tracks is selected and copied to an MP3 player (with possible transcoding) an ENOSPC needs to be dealt with by providing the user with an opportunity to remove (enough) tracks to allow the copy to succeed. Perhaps something like: Your MP3 does not have enough space to copy the selected tracks. Please choose tracks to delete to free up the space required by the new tracks: [ --------------------- progress meter[1] ------------------------ ] [ OK ] [ Cancel ] [1] The progress meter is a 0-100% and reflects the amount of space needed by the new tracks. The user continues to select tracks from the list until the progress meter goes to 100% (or more). The OK button should probably be greyed out until enough space has been made available. Thots? b. Actually it seems even worse than this. Try dragging all of you songs to the device (in my case an iPod Nano 2nd generation I think) and watch the endless amount of dialogs popping up notifying you that it cannot write to the device. In my case I seem to have dragged all my music in one case (had to turn off the machine I think that time) and about several hundreds too many in another case. Fwiw, iTunes handles this by warning you before the copy that there isn't enouh space on the device and that it will copy as much as it can. And it's just an estimation since it managed to copy all of it even if it warned it wouldn't be able to do it. Everything goes fine, but the upnp-server. I tried many solutions, but all of them was only accessible by local. Then, with mediatomb, i realized that upnp-server was bound to "virbr0", a logical net interface created by kvm for its virtualized systems, so i forced mediatomb to bind eth0 and everything goes fine. And the question is, is there any way, in Rhythmbox, to bind its network plugins as DAAP and uPnP, to a specific network interface? Thank you very much and keep up the gooood work.
