I.ve experienced problems under intrepid too.
I tried to run Programs as root using sudo.

gconftool-2 --set
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/gtk-modules/gail:atk-bridge
--type string /desktop/gnome/interface/accessibility
Some times it worked and sometimes not.
Orca didn't load the firefox script correctly and was not accessible.
Maybe you can try to unset this for testing???
gconftool-2 -u /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/gtk-modules/gail:atk-bridge
