Firstly, it is released under GPL version 3, so is open-source.
It was written to be speech-friendly under the console, mostly in bash. I
see no technical reason why it should not run in a gnome terminal as is,
but I never tried that.
I think ocropus has a kind of a python api, but I do not know if it is
nicely packaged as a python module.
