Hi everyone=2C
&nbsp=3B&nbsp=3B&nbsp=3B A quick introduction is in order=
!&nbsp=3B I'm a visually impaired software developer who primarily uses Win=
dows/ZoomText exclusively at work and mostly at home - but that is starting=
to change. :)&nbsp=3B I used Linux about 5-6 years ago and in a hopefully =
unrelated matter also had a cataract in my "good" eye.&nbsp=3B Linux became=
harder after it was removed=2C assistive technology just didn't seem to be=
there a few years ago and my last memories of Linux were running emacspeak=
with Festival.&nbsp=3B So this past weekend I downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 and s=
tarted using Orca.&nbsp=3B Thank you everyone for work=2C Linux is definite=
ly more accessible than I remember it!

Since I've used ZoomText for =
so long I tried to magnifier.&nbsp=3B It is quite smooth but the response i=
s "jerky".&nbsp=3B I am thinking it's my old Intel 82945G onboard graphics =
card that's to blame=2C also my Ubunto install is pretty "stock" with littl=
e tweaking so far.&nbsp=3B What are your experiences?

I hope I'll ev=
entually figure out the magnifier more=2C but that's ok I'm digging the scr=
een reader!&nbsp=3B The eSpeak voice is much better than Festival.&nbsp=3B =
I've done little things like use the terminal=2C setup IM=2C etc. but my ex=
perience is with magnifiers not screen readers.&nbsp=3B FireFox 3 is my fir=
st big hurdle.&nbsp=3B I try to tab around the window but get stuck in the =
links.&nbsp=3B How do I get the screen reader to read the text on even just=
a simple site like Google?&nbsp=3B Should I maybe be using another web bro=
wser too?&nbsp=3B Something like Lynx?&nbsp=3B Is there any guides out ther=
e for someone who is totally new to screen readers?

From what I've r=
ead it looks like FireFox suport is evolving.&nbsp=3B My distro has Orca 2.=
24.2 on it.&nbsp=3B Would building 2.25.2 be a significent improvement?&nbs=
p=3B The only thing I am wondering is if I do this will it totally confuse =
apt? :)

I apologize for all my questions but it is nice to be back o=
n Linux again.&nbsp=3B Let me get up to speed=2C brush up on my python and =
