Anxious to try Alexander's nm update

I downloaded the file and extracted it (it makes a folder called pptp).
I've done ./configure in pptp every subfolder - no luck!

I've exhausted my linux installation skills and need direction (the 
standard /.configue, make, make install do NOT work).
Obviously I am missing something, but what?

Any help appreciated so I can get my vpn to work working again.
