Failure to load some SVG files

I have just recompiled GTK, etc., and for *some* SVG icons I now get 

Couldn't recognise the image file format for file... errors.

Other SVGs still work fine.

rsvg-view still views the problem SVGs with no error.

What can I do to fix the problem?
