autoconf, automake

I know this is a useless effort creating a message that
will be ignored, but is there any documentation
about using automake and autoconf with gtk2 and/or
gnome2.

It looks like all documentation of this type has been
carefully removed from gtk2 and gnome2 documentation,
and it is different than gtk1/gnome1 was.

Or has the configure/build system been replaced with
something else? The documentation mentions using
pkg-config at the command line, but stops there.
