Highlighting a label

I want to tell the user that the text of a label widget recently has been 
changed by highlighting its background (just like a button having the 
pointer). I have tried to put the label in a frame widget but nothing 
happens to the background when calling gtk_widget_set_state(). Don't frames 
have their own windows or what is going wrong here?
