I am working on a program that also plots functions and uses rulers. I
had the same problem and the only way to solve it was to make my own
rulers. Look at NumExp (numexp.sourceforge.net). In XYGraph, you can even
drag the rulers. Then, if you like them, you can use them in your
program. They're in src/mygtk*ruler.[ch].
