FIle Selection

I am new to GTK+ and I am having some difficulty getting the file 
selection widget to work properly.

1. I can't seem to destroy the file selection widget properly.  I have 
tried several things, but I keep getting segfaults.  What is the best 
way to destroy this widget?

2. Is there a way to have the execution wait for a filename to be 
selected?  I need to things happen after the filename is selected, 
but it is not waiting.

Sorry for the naivety of my questions...
