I thought the GnomePixmap was simply a holder of images and did not display
them.

Have you tried GnomePixmap (or GtkPixmap if not using
GNOME)? It's not in
the book really but it's trivial -
gnome_pixmap_new_from_file("blah.gif")
more or less.
