Should teach me not to open my mouth when I don't quite know what I'm
talking about. You can probably tell I used to be a windows programmer
(still am at work), recently having made the transition to Linux/Gtk+...

Sorry for the confusion... I've used gtk_signal_emit_by_name elsewhere
without problems, and (incorrectly) assumed it would work in this case as
well...
