memory-leak?

Can anyone tell me what could cause the following error?
Gdk-ERROR **: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
  serial 62741 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0
aborting...
Aborted
This error occurs in an application that shows several XPM-images in a
window. After some clicking around (and loading images from the harddisk
and so on, the application terminates with the message above.
...so why? (I watched the applications mem-usage and there seemed not to
be any mem-leaks...)
