No, a non-threaded application will work with a thread-safe library, so
you should install the thread safe libraries.

I had no special problems upgrading my applications to glibc2. To be sure,
I installed the backward compatible libraries and compilers on my Debian
2.0 box, but never needed them, so I removed them when I upgraded to
Debian 2.1. Find yourself an old PC, install a glibc2 based distribution
on it and try to compile your applications.
