In my experience, overlaying anything on top of anything doesn't work... I
have tangled with that problem enough to have become sufficiently
frustrated... However, if i'm not mistaken, GL provides ample resources to
do this sort of thing. If it doesn't trash your current code, try working
selections into GL (or even try making a widget extending the gtkglarea,
which would be really cool and open-sourcey of you).
