The answer to your other question about binary compatability is that an
app linked against gtk 1.2 will only work with gtk 1.2. If someone
deletes it from their system and only has 1.4, then they won't be able to
run it. Note, it's perfectly legitimiate to have gtk 1.0, 1.2, and 1.4
libs installed on your system at once - they won't conflict with each
other.
