strange g_thread_init

Hi everyone,
I am trying to make a program pthreads aware and thus defined
G_THREADS_ENABLES and G_THREADS_TMPL_POSIX in my program.
I then have g_thread_init() before gtk_init and gdk_threads_enter
and gdk_threads_leave in the program. When I compile the program
I get an error message g_thread_init not defined. Can someone
tell me why this is happening and how to fix.
