Create XV style previews

Hi,

does anybody have a routine to create XV styel previews? I found code
to read and display them in the GIMP sources. This works fine. Of
course there is code to create them too, but it seems to me that to get
those functions working, I'll end up copying half of the GIMP code.

So does anybody have more compact code to do this?
