Screen captures don't have to capture the entire visible window. They can
grab via X window id's. Take a look at both the Gimp Screen Capture
plug-in (part of the Gimp distributions or maybe on the Registry) and the
xwd source (part of the X11 source distribution).
I think, but am not certain, that it amounts to requesting the server
provide the region of pixels within a given X window. But that's a
marginally-educated guess. I haven't looked at the code in a *looong*
time.
