Key Press Events and Widgets

Am I correct in assuming that only a top level window can receive key press
events?

I can't seem to get them on a drawing area widget even after setting the event
mask.

Is that because they require an X Window to receive the focus? Or can I set the
focus myself? My app makes more sense if the main drawing area widget can handle
its own key presses....

Enlightenment is appreciated. Thanks.
