Problems with gtk1.1.x, gnome, etc.

I don't know if I have a problem with gtk, gnome, Linux or other.
I have installed RedHat 5.1 on a PII/233 with a PS/2 mouse and a S3 Virge DX
board.
I have also installe the "very early" version on gnome (from RedHat CD) and
all
was ok.
Now I have get new version of gnome (0.3) with new gtk (1.1.2) and with all
updates from RedHat, including all updates for imaging and Xfree86 update for
S3V drive.
Now I have some new problems using gmc and other applications (apparently all
with a Clist window)
- no possibility to select an item with double click but only with keyboard
- when I drag a file from gmc and drop it on another gmc window I get a small
  grey window without any content 
In old version I get a small window with something like "Copy - Move -
Symlink"
What is wrong?
