I was looking for something similar myself, for the same reasons.  Try looking
at the zvtterm widget that comes in gnome-libs.  I haven't been able to
compile it yet (I can't seem to compile gtk anymore), but it looks like I
should be able to fix it to work for me, and it may work ofr you.
