How to display images?

Hi,
  How does one typically display images in gtk+ apps?  My images will be
in a "raw" format (pixel intensities for grayscale or RGB for color).  I
will be displaying many images quickly(eg. video), so I want to avoid
the overhead of converting image formats if possible.
