Weird Icons when Exporting Display

I ran a quick browse through the archives of the mailing lists and I
wasn't able to find anything on this, so I thought I'd throw this one
out...
If I export my display to another X display and my GTK/GNOME app, the
colors of the smaller icons (i.e. mini-icons in the menus) are screwed up.
I'm pretty sure it's a GTK thing (whether it's my fault or not) as opposed
to a GNOME issue because the little icons in my compound list look pretty
funny and they're not loaded with any GNOME routines.
When I say the colors are screwed up I mean that it looks as if the images
were originally palettized images whose palette was ignored or something
of the sort. The problem even occurs if I run apps on another machine and
export them to my display though it doesn't happen if I open the apps
locally.
I'd appreciate a tip or a pointer to a place where this has already been
documented... thanks!
I apologize if this is a GNOME related issue...
