 I just thought I would say thanks...  

 The gtk_label_set() call did what I needed.  One thing that I find missing
in this package is a reference man page(maybe it is in the info stuff, but
I am old fashion and want my man page) with all the calls and a short
summary of what they do.

 I don't have to worry about images for the label(although someday I might)
since a single text character '0' or '1' is going to be used initially.
