I've tried myself too. What I haven't found yet, and not only for Gnumeric, is a good how-to on actually doing such compiling safely and cleanly without disrupting one's working environment. That is, I have 2 "main" working machines, one running Xandros 3.02, which gets Gnumeric 1.4.3 (sigh!) using apt-get, and Ubuntu Dapper, which get's (as far as I can tell) 1.59 (it may have just got to 1.61). But to really check tests, I need the latest release. The difficulties are that if one tries to install the "new" libraries, existing and needed applications can become unworkable. Some sort of safe sandbox (chroot environment) is likely needed. But some good, sane, advice would be helpful. I've had suggestions of putting up Gentoo, but I've played distro-roulette enough to now be very careful about making changes. I've also some critical, everyday things I must keep working. To ensure that I'm not just complaining, if someone sends me rough notes and I get things working, I'll be happy to edit and prepare the HowTo and to the extent my schedule allows maintain it. I use Linux, but I'm prepared to try to help out on other platforms with editing a HowTo or possibly running a WinXP boot that I do have available. I am talking about the possibility to recompile Gnumeric with more than 64k lines. Unfortunately my main use of this feature would be in a windows environment. To me, a version that could handle more lines than 64k would be great help. The optimal size would probably be 512k rows x 64 colums as it fits my needs for 99% of the cases. A version of 256k lines x 64 columns still would fulfil 95% of my needs. The main problem is that I have no clue on how to make this recompile for windows work. I am shure that you have read about this problem several times already and maybe the version I search does exist already. In this case I would be very delighted if somebody could point me in the direction. Else if somebody who has the knowledge on how to perform this recompile could supply me with a 512k x 64 version that would be greatly appreciated. I am fully aware about the performance drawbacks that might have, but I assure you that whatever they might be, I will gladly accept them. I am new to this list and if this topic is something like a no-do thing I would like to appologize immediately. Thanks for all who read this and even mors so to the white knight who can supply a Windows version with more than 64k rows. I would like to be able to test, but the libraries needed to support gnumeric have a way of getting ahead of what is available in the standard distributions. I am tempted to have the latest and greatest, but libraries that should be compatible sometimes turn out not to be, so I tend to stick close to a standard flavor of Linux, changing whenever it becomes impossible to live with the old version (that time seems have shrunk to one year). I have moved my spreadsheets to Dapper, but I still need to go back to my Fedora3 setup for some other things. I have also been looking at FreeBSD with an eye to having that as my testing environment with only a minimal number of standard programs that could be broken while compiling test versions of things that interest me. > To ensure that I'm not just complaining, if someone sends me rough notes > and I get things working, I'll be happy to edit and prepare the HowTo > and to the extent my schedule allows maintain it. WinXP has even turned out to be less painful than I expected. Most of the concerns that I have read about in this list are the result of trying to do everything from the spreadsheet. I have been able to get more satisfying results by copying data into gnuplot for graphs and creating efficient TeX or html is the gnumeric workbook for copying int emacs. Maybe it is just that, as a mathematician, I am more comfortable with marlup languages and have little patience for finding the exact high level command hidden a large application. > JN (nashjc _AT_ uottawa.ca for off-list communications) > > --RTBumby From acuster@gmail.com Tue Jul 11 00:37:08 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: gnumeric-list@gnome.org Delivered-To: gnumeric-list@gnome.org Received: from localhost (unknown [127.0.0.1]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 46CAF3B02EE for ; Tue, 11 Jul 2006 00:37:08 -0400 (EDT) Received: from menubar.gnome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (menubar.gnome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 27011-04 for ; Tue, 11 Jul 2006 00:37:05 -0400 (EDT) Received: from nf-out-0910.google.com (nf-out-0910.google.com [64.233.182.187]) by menubar.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 40B353B02A2 for ; Tue, 11 Jul 2006 00:37:04 -0400 (EDT) Received: by nf-out-0910.google.com with SMTP id m19so204633nfc for ; Mon, 10 Jul 2006 21:33:04 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.48.249.9 with SMTP id w9mr1360259nfh; Mon, 10 Jul 2006 03:46:06 -0700 (PDT) Received: from 133.28-64-87.adsl-dyn.isp.belgacom.be ( [87.64.28.133]) by mx.gmail.com with ESMTP id o53sm4045118nfa.2006.07.10.03.46.06; Mon, 10 Jul 2006 03:46:06 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: Building gnumeric and dependencies in a separate location. Fortunately there are several solutions. I think chroot is overkill for your needs since your situation is common. The developers often have several versions of gnumeric built and installed in different locations. GNOME has several build scripts available, notably jhbuild and garnome, which can be installed in their own directory tree (away from everything else). I don't remember the details but the explanation is in the README files or probably on the net. The GNUMERIC build system can handle this using the command-line argument --prefix=... to the autogen/configure scripts. For years I have built and installed gnumeric and whatever dependencies were required in /soft/CVS/TEST/ without having any impact on my system. Once built, to run that gnumeric I then had to adjust both the PATH and the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environmental variables to first look in that directory and then in the standard locations. This strategy is: 1) build with --prefix=/the/alternate/path/ 2) run with a script or command line to expand the PATH and LD_... Note that if you have to build dependencies, then these environmental variables will have to be set during the build of any dependent library. Alternatively, GNOME has several build scripts available, notably jhbuild and garnome, which can be installed in their own directory tree (away from everything else). I don't remember the details but the explanation is in the README files or probably on the net. These will often require building from very far down in the stack (below gtk) which may or may not be what you want. However, you can build these and not affect your running system. Hopefully that will help you on your way. --adrian On Sun, 2006-07-09 at 20:34 -0400, Prof J C Nash wrote: > I've seen a number of msgs on this list about compiling a verion, > usually the latest, of Gnumeric. Hello all,

as a new subscriber and user of Gnumeric I have read about a feature that would be very useful to me.

Best regards,
Richard

But unless the symbol is a trivial macro it's not actually defined yet, merely declared. You've said, "Trust me, I'm going to provide gsl_interp_cspline, which takes such-and-such arguments and returns such-and-such a value." But to make good on your promise, you have to link to the library that actually defines (provides) that function, -L/somedir -lgsl. Depending on when the export failed the file may be unrecoverable. xls uses the OLE2 container format (like a tar file) to hold it's content. Vidhya,

Gnumeric handles file I/O & dealing with formats using
plugins. Which is how it imports/exports XL, OOCalc files
etc.

So just start looking at writing handlers/plugin for
your specific needs.

As for password protection it beats me on how/what
kind of secure encryption algorithm youre going to use
and implement. Given to me Id just use another program
to encrypt/decrypt this stuff, anyway it beats me.

My basic question is this: is it possible to automatically align a bar plot to the correct place on an axis? An incomplete example of what I want to make is attached, but there should be a histogram at each point (0.0, 0.1, 0.2 etc.) along the x-axis. The attached graph was created by adding a second x-axis and a third y-axis, then manually adjusting the ranges to position the histogram correctly. The histogram itself was created using the histogram tool provided under Tools->Statistical Analysis. Adding labels to a bar plot doesn't position it correctly along the y-axis (it just chooses values 0.5, 1.5, 2.5 etc. as the y values for each bar). Also for my purpose I need to be able to specify an offset to each histogram (bar plot), which I'm not sure gnumeric supports. It's possible that the (simple) enhancements to bar plots are wishlist bugs. If you need me to send the gnumeric source file please ask.
