Doesn't sound very logical to me though.

Why really? In the event that you want to close all open files and
then have a new blank one, you can do it in two ways as I see it.
1. Close all then start gnumeric from the menu.
2. Open a new blank and then close all the others.
But I see what you mean, I'm not sure it will be logical though :-)
