I'm still getting used to the close and exit things, as well.

What about having Close close the current document and open a new
blanck document in the same window, if it's the last sheet open?

Alternatively, what about a warning dialog when you chose Close
and it's the last sheet asking if you're sure you want to close the
last sheet and exit gnumeric.
