I'm sorry for getting to this a bit late, but the results were announced
just as my end-semesters began.

My name is Arun Tejasvi Chaganty, and I'm 19 studying Computer Science
in the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India. I live in
Hyderabad, and I'll be working from there. I'm going to be working on

Dear students,

You probably know about GUADEC, the biggest GNOME conference, where a
lot of our community members meet every year. In 2008, it's happening
in July in Istambul (Turkey). You can learn more about it at:

Last year, some of the GSoC students were able to attend GUADEC and it
was really fun and useful. Meeting your mentor, some people interested
in your project and other community members has a positive impact on
your work. Showing what you already achieved is also fantastic to get
some good feedback.

So it's probably a good thing for the students of this year's GSoC to
attend GUADEC, if possible. We talked with GUADEC organizers, and they
support the idea. While there's no guarantee, it's possible that you
can get a sponsorship to attend GUADEC, if you need it. Our budget is
limited, but we'll do our best. Of course, attending GUADEC is not
mandatory. :-)

So, we'd like to know if you'd like to attend the conference and if
you'll need sponsorship for doing so. This will help the GUADEC
organizers a bit. Please show them some love and reply to this mail
asap so we can know about your plans wrt GUADEC.

Hi,

in fact I was waiting for this mail ;) I've heard from my mentor, 
daniel, last years GUADEC was really fun. I would like to attend the 
conference to meet some other GSoC-Students and mentors and other GNOME 
developer.

I'm already registered at the GUADEC site, but I haven't applied for a 
sponsorship yet. Do we have to care ourselfs for the sponsorship or is 
this going through a backdoor for GSoC-Students?

I have already been accepted to speak, and am working through the
sponsorship process with Baris. Flights from NZ are criminally
expensive.

Like most students here, I already filed my sponsorship request. I
really want to do an ad-hoc usability testing session for f-spot at
GUADEC.

I do hope we get response to these requests soon, I'd like to book soon
in case I can't get sponsoring (which will be a financial drain I'm not
looking forward to).

Apart from the financial side: How about a GSoC talk or so, where we,
the students can show what they are working on? This raises visibility
and also speeds up the student-community integration.

Hi Ruben and others;

Please book, even buy your tickets if you plan to attend GUADEC 2008.
Sponsorship mechanism works in such a way that you pledge the refund for
your plane ticket, it's not GUADEC organizers buy your ticket. So either
way (you're sponsored or not) you should buy cheapest ticket possible. 

Also this year I may ask partial sponsorship option to GSoC students
(ie. you pay some part of your plane ticket, we pay some part of it) in
order to make them sponsored even though we have tight budget.

Hey I'd really like to attend the conference, but I doubt I'll be able
without sponsorship.. I did some search and it seems a bit difficult to
reach instanbul from here (sardinia).. btw, I'll apply at guadec website
asap.

discussing this to my mentor.

Anybody from the Germans who found out where to get a flight for a good
price? It is not that crucial from where...

The only one I searched are from Munich (MUC) to Atatürk (Istanbul, IST 
I think). Actual prices are about 220 - 240€, thats not that much I 
think... (to istanbul and back to munich...)

You guys should feel sorry for me, In one month, the difference in
cost to fly from New Zealand increased from $NZ2100 to $NZ3100 (and
increase of about 500 euro)

Hi!

With some of the summer of code students=EF=BB=BF [1] going to GUADEC, woul=
dn't
it be nice to schedule a session related to GSoC? Perhaps a general
introduction by one of the responsibles/mentors (Lucas?) and a chance to
introduce each of the projects, possibly talk about the progress.

Anyone interested?

present their work, I need to add another lightning session as we're
pretty full now.

I was thinking a full Google Summer of Code lightning talks session,
with 12 - 15 GSOC students.

hi my students! ;)

gnome is a big family for most of us, and we have a totally great
community. nice people, guys, who cant wait to help you with your
problems, artists, who want to create awesome artwork for your app,
bugzilla people who wait to forward some bugs to you...

so:

i saw some student blogs on planet.gnome.org, but definitely not all of
them. i personally would love to see some information about your task
and your achievements. it also is totally great to inform the gnome
community about your things, as you will get a lot of feedback.
so, if you have a blog and are not aggregated on the planet, just ask
one of the gsoc admins to be included.

communications: we hang out on irc. i do not want to make a secret out
of that. we just lurk around there. well, actually some people eat ice
cream, while they are lurking around. or they make some plans for the
next ice cream deathmatch. you probably know the #soc channel, which is
quite still.. but do you know #gnome-hackers ? all cool hackers lurk
around there, and you have the possibility to ask them awesome things.
