I'm unsure about that GNOME goal. I believe GTK+3 apps mostly use a standard printing dialog. I used jhbuild to build and run gedit 3.11.x, and there is already a menu option to save the filename: http://imgur.com/jEgShzM Perhaps a preliminary method to go about cleaning up this GNOME goal would be to learn how GTK+3 apps open this printing dialog, verify that this unified printing dialog DOES now include the print to file filename (it definitely didn't used to, but it does now), and then update the wiki page with which apps are already finished (since they use this dialog), which are not needed, and which, if any, do printing without the standard printing dialog. I am currently pursuing Computer Science and Engineering at Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology INDIA. I have been following the discussions on the mailing list for past few months. I had got an indepth knowledge of the tools used for the development of open source software. My skills include Programming languages: GNU C/C++, Python, Javascript, Version control systems Git/Github and SVN. I am also aware with many of the web development application tools and content management systems. I am an ambitous person willing to learn other technologies when need in future. I choose this organisation for the contribution as the work the community does looks very appealing and interesting to me and useful for the whole community. The skills used by the organisation for the development of open source software matches with my skills to much extent. I had installed the required necessary tools and setup the environment in my system needed for the contribution to open source software. I had got myself aware of the source to some extent and had forked on my github account. I had also read the contribution, development tutorial on the community webpage. I would like to seek the mentors help in the selection of the project for which the idea has been proposed for the Gsoc and someone is willing to mentor the project idea. I will highly appreciate with any kind of help, guidance from the mentors to help me move forward to contribute to the software starting off with some easy tasks and then moving levels higher so as to make a strong proposal for the upcoming Google Summer of Code 2014. Firstly, I have to say that I haven't decided yet upon a project on which to contribute, that is why I'm writing to this mailing-list since I expect to get more general advice here. As far as my knowledgement is concerned, I am well-versed in C and C++, bash scripting and I'm a beginner in javascript. I'm also very passionate about Linux and Gnome in particular. Taking in consideration this, I want you to suggest me a couple of projects which have as requirements these programming languages and where I can find easy bugs to fix for the beginning. I already read the wiki pages and installed the needed development tools. In fact, right now the jhbuild script is running and it seems promising. I have one more explicit question to end with: is there a method to import all project's sources in an IDE ( anjuta I guess is most used ) ? I mean in one step or somehow and have it organized in the project within the IDE as they are in the project's directory. Thank you and I'm looking forward for your support ! Hi Bogdan, You can get an idea by looking at the ideas published in https://wiki.gnome.org/Outreach/SummerOfCode/2014/Ideas There are different strategies to choose a project to work on. If you are already using GNOME, then a good candidate is an application that you use a lot and it is in the list I linked above. If you are just getting familiar with GNOME, then you can look for applications that are close to what to work on a daily basis, and start using them intensively, check the ideas page, check the bug reports, etc. Regards, --=20 Germ=C3=A1n Poo-Caama=C3=B1o http://calcifer.org/ --=-5HerA+SDXbORpkH4fusr Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: This is a digitally signed message part Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) iEYEABECAAYFAlMGTp0ACgkQ1hl0UcEpZYz7ngCdG6TDl4WT2ctKh6FR3Egks1O5 KhQAn0zosEo40MxA4u9iCxnpR6yXFw7k =30QH -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-5HerA+SDXbORpkH4fusr-- From gpoo@calcifer.org Thu Feb 20 19:04:02 2014 Return-Path: X-Original-To: gnome-love@gnome.org Delivered-To: gnome-love@gnome.org Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by restaurant.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C8D067631E for ; Thu, 20 Feb 2014 19:04:02 +0000 (UTC) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at gnome.org X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -1.9 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-1.9 tagged_above=-999 required=2 tests=[BAYES_00=-1.9, DKIM_SIGNED=0.1, DKIM_VALID=-0.1, RCVD_IN_DNSWL_NONE=-0.0001] autolearn=ham Received: from restaurant.gnome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (restaurant.gnome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 0JSL7lRnz2SZ for ; Thu, 20 Feb 2014 19:04:01 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mail-pd0-f174.google.com (mail-pd0-f174.google.com [209.85.192.174]) by restaurant.gnome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8C830762FC for ; Thu, 20 Feb 2014 19:03:42 +0000 (UTC) Received: by mail-pd0-f174.google.com with SMTP id z10so2202133pdj.33 for ; Thu, 20 Feb 2014 11:03:41 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=calcifer.org; s=g; h=sender:message-id:subject:from:to:cc:date:in-reply-to:references :organization:content-type:mime-version; bh=Wy3XoxTbzVx7P+sVxoKMBlkxAnLrorRofqMfVsSPl1M=; b=bxJt+Ma+gqltyAhZ0+vy3VACzKpt4z1VoWwUB9OTzq1nukNHDwh9SV5DYoJQtKhuje rd+wWN8UuMuPNTh72RxEpGC9TXBZlZLVVm641jO5HP7bdiMUDBDV4G6WW01WWsUHNCfY Cb1sZyuiexPQhq92MLF9H+kISVo2uNEOgyWbU= X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20130820; h=x-gm-message-state:sender:message-id:subject:from:to:cc:date :in-reply-to:references:organization:content-type:mime-version; bh=Wy3XoxTbzVx7P+sVxoKMBlkxAnLrorRofqMfVsSPl1M=; b=I4W6/cUH3egt56zqoCBL+jHGRrBNsiAeeAqyYn5IHF+ml3+TmsvcqaNotUPuWHax+7 76BTgxyr9+UN2MAaSYAs4OnliOQgWjbfnmXkhXkbF64hCMhN8e+Q7MStYYNgVtPKjeZQ UZVZvAuvtZ3WHbe9vmMzVI9/x2b/yc7TvPqEorMAoUF4lkIuPiVcRm1zp/uwztme+YHk fP7G79aM8ekE4CFfZt0xy3EX0hq+xLNFPuegEpcUfUzb+K+k2MFqZsAVKFINUICxOyhM VMac+msh6+1sCOTT91L07qE/WCYhaHtPM2u7adyvTI5q6RhEEEMdVxHJF288byyYcXHh 9UIg== X-Gm-Message-State: ALoCoQnSe2qhMTQLOgYGvki8xp1M8UpUhkALy0JN/IW/ul0t992AHjgEnZYnBUSn3kBvXNuUeRq2 X-Received: by 10.68.218.3 with SMTP id pc3mr3910372pbc.71.1392923021163; Thu, 20 Feb 2014 11:03:41 -0800 (PST) Received: from [142.104.68.94] (sai.cs.UVic.CA. A good strategy is to start contributing to application that you usually use. Having a good understanding on how the application works it is very helpful to understand the code base later (things will start making sense sooner than later). In addition, it will be easier for you to spot bugs and annoyances. > I already read the wiki pages and installed the needed development tools. > In fact, right now the jhbuild script is running and it seems promising. >=20 > I have one more explicit question to end with: is there a method to impor= t > all project's sources in an IDE ( anjuta I guess is most used ) ? You fill find developers using emacs, vim, gedit, anjuta or even eclipse. I am not versed in Anjuta myself, but my understanding is that you can import one project at a time. Hi, You are welcome. Don't forget to use "Reply all" when you reply to a mailing list (it is considered a good practice). Thus, everybody get aware of any acknowledgement, or can contribute with different approaches and whatnot, or other people might see benefits in your question/answers as well. Everybody win.
