gnopernicus and special german characters

Hi all,

I tested gnopernicus 1.0 with my handytech brailledisplay.
It works but there are problems displaying the german "umlaut" on the 
braille-display.
What can I do to get this work?

Another question is: I tried to get the brlapi to get the braille 
display working in the bash shell and gnopernicus together.
I installed brltty and set a handytech display.
In the bash it works.

I am getting cannot initialize braille.... in gnopernicus.
