I doubt the first reason, as nautilus supports it.  As far as bonobo, I
had come across that same explanation while searching for this
yesterday, so I didn't have high hopes.

Since I'm pretty much the only (power) user of my system, I'll go ahead
and edit the system files, but is there anything I can/should do to help
this be available in the future?*
