Making sure that Ekiga is trying to use the correct network interface: Edit -> Preferences -> Protocols -> Network Settings -> Network Interface: ListenOn 2. That your firewall is set up correctly. The wiki http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Ekiga_behind_a_NAT_router has a wealth of information on the topic (although the first-time setup GUI should have given you information about it you can run it again by Edit -> Configuration Druid 3. You can get more information by running ekiga from the command line with the highest debugging level "ekiga -d 4" Hope some of that helps. The NAT test thing said "Port Restricted NAT". Mind you, I'm about to change ISP, and I could compile SIP and H.323 support into my NAT box - might that fix the error I saw? I'm just kind of surprised from the error message that ekiga gave that it didn't seem to be able to distinguish between errors caused by ports already being taken on my local machine so that it couldn't bind to them, and errors caused by needing to forward ports on a separate router! That should be fine. The other possible culprit then is that you have a previous instance of ekiga running which hasn't been killed properly. Looking at your original email again I see that I missed this line: "When I quit ekiga, the window closes but it just hangs and doesn't terminate." So, it's quite possible that you have a previous instance of ekiga hanging around. You can check for sure with "netstat -p -l | grep ekiga" and follow it up with a "killall ekiga" or just kill the PID mentioned in the /ekiga column output from the above. Hope that helps, I'm out of easy ideas after that. This time, Ekiga recognized my camera and the video codec had changed from V4L to V4L2. However the video still did not work and the error message, "...Could not open the chosen channel..." persisted. So I looked at the properties and saw that the channel being used was channel 1. So I changed it to channel 0, and my local video came on!! However, when I tried to make a call, the video disappeared, the error message returned, and I could not get even local video on any (0-3) channel that I tried. So I'm almost back to square 1 (or 0, if you are binary-inclined). Here is the output of "ekiga -d 4". We are running an Asterisk setup in a call center. The Agents use SIP-softphones to connect to the Asterisk-server via local office LAN (no NAT). Asterisk is connected to an E1 line with a Digium Te122. The Agents are using Ekiga for Windows as softphone at the moment. Our problem: sometimes, after being a couple of minutes into a call, the called party can't hear our agent anymore, the agent can hear the called party fine. this happens randomly in every 20th call or so, it doesn't happen at all for some agents. i am puzzled where to start to search for the error? is this probably an Asterisk/zaptel problem or would the error rather be on the softphone/windows side? I put up two machines running the latest snapshots on Ubuntu Hardy and called each other directly (without my Asterisk) The goal is of course videoconference. So I tested how the new video codecs would perform. My settings: Bandwith between 192kbit/s and 1024 kbit/s (influence on image quality but not the issues mentioned below) H261 - (Ekiga Ekiga) - works fine - as expected. Image quality as I know it from the old times :-) H263 - (Ekiga Ekiga) - connection established - but no video transmission. Each side sees its own video only - see attached -d 4 log H263 - (Ekiga - Linphone) - works fine - but Linphone shows somehow poor image quality - blocks and pixels. H263 - (Ekiga - Xtenphone - Windows) - works fine (this one I did over my Asterisk as I recieved a video call :-) during my tests) Theora (Ekiga-Ekiga) Just works fine, good image quality Theora (Ekiga-Linphone) Just works fine (nice images on Linphone - unlike H263) H264 (Ekiga-Ekiga) - Ekiga crashes. See attached -d 4 trace H264 (Ekiga-Linphone) works for a couple of seconds, then Ekiga crashes. see attached -d 4 trace I's probably worth mentioning that the Hardy Snapshot of Ekiga doesn't find its libx264.so. Ubuntu installs a file called libx264.so.57. I had to symlink. Ekiga complains in the -d 4 log, starts anyway but crashes when I try mpeg4. The strange thing is that I cannot determine the image size by setting in video devices. (probably it is adjusting the cam and not the transmission) Anyway. I hope my tests are of some use - and if not please give me a hint what I should test or trace. Greetings Conrad PS. Can you try this: Remove the symlink libx264.so , intall the package libx264-dev , try to start ekiga and see if it loads the H264 plugin this time. If it fix the problem I'll add a dependency on libx264-dev. (my vis-a-vis used no headset, only normal speakers and the microphone from the Logitech QuickCam pro 9000) I think the algorithm skype uses is quite simple: whenever sound is coming from the other party and being output they just mute the mike. Sometimes there are audible artifacts but it much better than nothing. While I did not know about the pc speakers I was thinking she/he used a head set until being told thats a simple speaker. This means that its not easy to interrupt the vis-a-vis while she/he is speaking w/o pauses, skype seems to use a rather short time constant for muting the mike. Perhaps there could be some audio threshold above which the microphone could be enabled unconditionally so some loud speak will make it to the other party. I did not try with both parties using speakers so far, perhaps this is asking for trouble... Comments welcome. The solution would be that in the gtkonly version (does not exist in etch, only in testing, sorry) these links work without relying on gnome. The simplest solution is to show the Web address in the window, and the user can make copy-paste in the browser. I've been trying to look for a config file where i could change this behaviour for GNOME in general and I don't remember well but I think the settings for this are in /usr/share/gnome/applications/defaults.list . I guess I basically replaced all the lines containing 'epiphany.desktop' at that time. Maybe someone here having a better knowledge of GNOME will know a more 'elegant' solution than changing things in /usr/share. Hope this hint will help a bit. It definitely helps a bit : the gnome settings for the default browser is stored in gconf, in the /desktop/gnome/applications/browser/exec key. You can see what it's set to with : gconftool-2 --get /desktop/gnome/applications/browser/exec (here it says: epiphany-browser) and set it to what you want with something like (one line): gconftool-2 --type=float --set /desktop/gnome/applications/browser/exec your_browser Snark From jpuydt at free.fr Sat Jun 14 13:47:52 2008 From: jpuydt at free.fr (Julien Puydt) Date: Sat, 14 Jun 2008 15:47:52 +0200 Subject: [Ekiga-list] Unable to reach links from PC-To-Phone account settings In-Reply-To: <4853C787.8060900@free.fr> References: <91ca1c260806130903jf3bdb52mea6bed10f727a3d@mail.gmail.com> <20080614130038.7bd21266@gmail.com> <4853C787.8060900@free.fr> Message-ID: <4853CC08.9020104@free.fr> Julien Puydt a ?crit : > It definitely helps a bit : the gnome settings for the default browser > is stored in gconf, in the /desktop/gnome/applications/browser/exec key. May I underline again that being short of space on my HD I'm not using gnome and very rarely I use graphic (with wmaker, which I suppose is a gtk applicaton?). Now, what happens when I click on the Pc-To-Phone tag is that the window with the four link tags appears but no link address is visible (right click); is, it doesn't seem a simple matter of which browser must be used but of the link not being 'felt' at all! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Running 'ekiga -d 1' showed me something I am not able to evaluate but could perhaps help you help me ... There they are: ...ekiga AVAHI failed to create client: Daemon not running ...ekiga Gnome support enabled ...ekiga DBUS support disabled BTW, Avahi is not in Etch and right now debian.org seems to be down, so I cannot check where this package is. [I have avahi in my ibook linuxppc version but that doen't help]. Thanks again for your help. Regards, Ennio -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The most appropriate method, if your router does not natively support SIP or H.323, is to forward the required ports to your internal machine in order to change your Symmetric NAT into Cone NAT.If you run this test again after the port forwarding has been done, it should report Cone NAT. This should allow Ekiga to be used with STUN support enabled. Do you mean when I compile opal? or when I compile ekiga? Where/how do I make this link? at the configure stage? at the make stage? somewhere else? Maybe you could show me the commandlines of what you have in mind. I don't understand "add this one to compilatino command line". Which one? What is compilatino command line? That solved the problem. Ekiga now works normally. I haven't tried compiling again but running the debian binaries now works and the libopal problem doesn't show up. I also got an update for the dev package, libopal-dev (2.2.11~dfsg1-4) and my guess is that that will solve the compilation problems. Thanks to all those who offered advice. Sometimes it hangs when trying to make a call. Sometimes it gets partway through a call before hanging. When it hangs in the middle of a call, I suddenly stop receiving audio. However, even when it's at 99% cpu, it doesn't seem to become unresponsive. I can click the buttons and enter things into the address bar. I can open up the preferences screen or the account screen.
