As an administrator of gnome desktops, I add my voice to yours to say 
that a better integration of the Gnome desktop with LDAP would be a 
great enhancement. I think LDAP is used more and more in the corporate 
environement, replacing old things like NIS on Unix and making the 
integration easier in a Windows environement with an AD (I don't like 
this but it is the corporate reality).
Now I can't say for the moment if LAT is the right tool to achieve this, 
since I didn't find the time to test it yet but it seems at least promising.
